Champions of Rokugan, a new board game from Monolith and based on the beloved Legend of the Five Rings IP, officially has a new Gamefound campaign today! The campaign is already fully funded.
In Champions of Rokugan, players explore over a dozen scenarios as the titular champions of various clans. You’ll need to complete objectives in Adventures, Investigations, and Battles using unique actions and elemental dice. This campaign-driven fantasy adventure supports solo and co-op.
Surprisingly, there aren’t trailers to help break down gameplay or components at the time of writing this. At least, not yet. But today’s campaign does reveal many key details, and there are a few previews via YouTube.

My L5R fandom may not go as far back as the TCG, but I did adore Fantasy Flight’s LCG. There are also many other games that explore this universe, from an RPG to last year’s River of Gold about rival merchants! Fans can enjoy just about every facet of this world.
Rokugan definitely carved out its own unique flavor in the popular feudal-Japan theme. Strategy tends to drive its gameplay, so I am a bit disappointed that Champions appears to focus on dice management.
But I haven’t played, and there are actions aplenty, so we’ll see. I’m also delighted that Honor and Glory will play major roles in Champions, as well as unpredictable enemies.
I’m most excited by the scope of this game, the campaign approach, and the cooperative element! Co-op is rare for Rokugan, even if FFG’s LCG did close with a co-op expansion.
There’s only a single pledge level right now, and it has a hefty price tag. This might frustrate more casual fans. But the campaign proudly teases that the pair of core boxes do include the complete content, and over a hundred detailed miniatures.
Honestly, I’m always happy to see any new L5R game, especially on this larger scale!
