Pluto Lost its Colors, a debut indie platformer from solo developer and publisher NINES, releases later this month. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on March 30, 2025.
In Pluto Lost its Colors, you’ll lead Pluto itself across four different realms to recover its titular colors after losing them to a black hole. You’ll need to master precision platforming, using simple controls to deal with physics-based obstacles.
Just a few days ago, NINES released a second gameplay trailer on YouTube. It explains the basic premise and hints at just a few of the various worlds you’ll need to overcome.
Pluto Lost its Colors has a truly playful and creative premise, and wisely puts that squarely in the title. That central idea is what really caught my interest! The trailers also showed off a cosmic realm to discover. However, I’m not certain how thematic the gameplay itself will be.
I love that Pluto literally regains its colors, one by one. But I wish they added a new ability, or affected the game state in a meaningful way. I also hoped that the realms cohesively related to Pluto’s natural space theme a bit more. I haven’t played yet, so we’ll see.
The level design does look interesting anyway, with some clever and abstract ideas. Also, physics is a tricky thing for any dev to pursue, let alone a solo developer. I happen to be a big fan of physics-based platforming! So much opportunity for unusual obstacles.
Pluto’s realms appear to offer a variety of properly zany obstacles that players can navigate with physics. And the art design looks polished, especially for a debut game.
The solo dev’s effort distinctly comes through here, and I think anyone can appreciate that. So, check out Pluto Lost its Colors when it launches in a couple of weeks!
