Explore a story-driven, aquatic world in Edge of Water

Indie developer Big Mood, a team of four based in Sweden, revealed new teasers and details this week regarding its upcoming game Edge of Water. In a thread on X, Big Mood showcased gameplay, screenshots, and a summary.

The devs describe Edge of Water as a coming-of-age story with “themes of grief and longing.” Replying to a curious fan in another tweet, they mention Edge of Water is a “narrative focused adventure game with puzzles.”

Edge of Water doesn’t have a release window. In fact, it doesn’t have a Steam page either, and the devs haven’t “fully started thinking” about music. Still, the studio is already sharing a lot of promising footage.

Big Mood doesn’t have lots of previous titles to consider, but they do have one moody platformer on itch, By the Blue. It seems to resemble Edge of Water with very defined worlds.

The stages are full of color and tell a story all on their own. There’s also a real sense of scope, with levels that feel large and open-ended.

Fans of isometric adventures might draw some comparisons to Dredge, especially with the watery setting. But I get the impression that between the solemn themes, puzzles, and “village intrigues,” Edge of Water will be a more patient experience.

That should work out pretty well for Big Mood, who definitely chose a fitting name for the studio. The Edge of Water screenshots and teasers have some terrific atmosphere, thanks to careful lighting and uneven details that make you want to learn more.

According to the studio’s main site, a couple of friends founded Big Mood just last year. And I really appreciate their mission statement there, which has an employee-minded approach to making games. They appear to have the talent and the right mindset early on, so be sure to keep an eye on their work!
