Major content update coming to pixel platformer Bzzzt this week

In a new post on X today, solo developer Karel Matejka announced that a “massive content update” will roll out in Bzzzt this week on July 18, 2024. Pixel platformer Bzzzt first launched in November 2023 to ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam.

In Bzzzt, players must use precision platforming and unlock a variety of new skills to help a little robot defeat an evil scientist in the year 4096. Gameplay includes flexible difficulty modes, from casual to permadeath, and a retro soundtrack to complete the 80’s flavor.

Today’s announcement reveals that the new content update will include “24 new stages and fresh game mechanics.” It also invites fans to reach out regarding the Steam Beta Branch, and features a brief teaser trailer:

The most recent update released in June, which introduced the Very Easy difficulty mode and various fixes. That certainly goes a long way for newcomers, and further reinforces the all-purpose design of Bzzzt. It was already unusually accessible.

However, adding 24 new levels seems even more ambitious. It’s an impressive addition, particularly for a solo developer. New content can always renew interest, so hopefully fans of the genre take notice.

There are already a decent amount of stages to complete in the game. But I’m very interested to see how the new level design evolves, especially after confirming new mechanics are under way. There is certainly room for more elaborate skills, but it’d be exciting to see other areas expand too.

If you’re unfamiliar with Bzzzt, this is an excellent time to step in. The vibrant colors, playful music, and variety of existing modes should intrigue any indie fan.
