In a new press release, Free League Publishing confirmed that the Moria – Through the Doors of Durin RPG expansion will release on August 1, 2024. This launch will include versions for both The One Ring and The Lord of the Rings 5e RPGs, under a different title for the latter.
In Moria – Through the Doors, players will find new landmarks, enemies, and encounters set between the Battle of Five Armies and Balin’s expedition. You’ll discover fresh rules for underground exploration, Moria-themed undertakings, rules for Durin’s Bane, and more.
Fans can pre-order Moria – Through the Doors now on the Free League Publishing product page. This includes a variety of preview images from the game, including both gorgeous artwork and content.
Here’s the original Kickstarter trailer from last year, via Free League’s YouTube channel, featuring key art:
While I haven’t had the chance to play, this expansion looks very promising, with some exciting new details. The underground rules and Durin’s Bane are real highlights, the former in particular.
Capturing the sheer scope and unusual dangers of underground travel could properly distinguish Moria. But it also opens the door to some very inspired storytelling throughout the RPG.
Tolkien didn’t offer quite as many details about dwarves. So, this RPG may also serve as an especially handy compilation of historical gems and ideas.
RPG expansions are often built for the initiated, such as Blade Runner’s new Fiery Angels expansion. But Moria sounds just as streamlined as the core game.
The One Ring remains one of the friendliest RPGs on the market, easy to learn and play. Moria could be a compelling entry point for fans of the IP to finally invest, and the 5e alternative is always convenient for longtime players.
Thus far, the new mechanics and illustrations show more genuine passion for the IP, a key selling point that fellow fans are sure to appreciate.
