Explore an apocalyptic world inspired by Japan in Meifumado

Meifumado, an action RPG from indie developer and publisher Old Bit Studio, has a new trailer and release date for July 18, 2024. The trailer showcases a variety of combat, weapons, and stages.

In Meifumado, players traverse through a post-apocalyptic world of non-linear stages. You’ll need to master your timing and a variety of weapons in order to defeat enemy warriors, and at times, the bizarre.

Although Old Bit Studio regularly posts on X, the new trailer and Steam page reveal little about the plot itself. It features 2D pixel art, platforming, and a bloody disposition.

Meifumado undoubtedly features gorgeous pixel art, distinctly marking it as a labor of love. The imagery is full of intrigue, so it’s a shame that the developer hasn’t teased more about the story.

I’d appreciate learning more about the protagonist, and the developer’s potential twists on the apocalyptic genre.

For now, curious fans have many glimpses of the main attraction, Meifumado’s combat system. The movement and animation are certainly eye-catching, and the boss fights in particular have noticeable personalities.

The parries look satisfying, as do the attacks and wall jumps. There appears to be a nice fluidity to this game. Most pixel art indies would settle for something less clear, and likely more bombastic.

The visuals for the environments are also a real standout. The details and depth of each stage look full and imaginative.

The music in the release date trailer also features a nice fusion of retro tunes and contemporary ideas, a good reflection of the setting. By all accounts, Meifumado is shaping up to be a solid indie with some stunning art design.
