Mojito Studios has officially launched a new Gamefound campaign this week for Incubo, a cooperative deck-building TTG about confronting your fears in a dream world. It supports both 2-player gameplay and a solo mode.
In Incubo, players must work together to adventure through 3 stacks of dream cards, representing REM phases. In order to progress, you will draw and play courage cards, using them to defeat a monster at the end of each REM phase and advance to the final boss.
Incubo was fully funded on day one. The featured “Sweet dreams pledge” with a postcard is currently going for $60. Last week, Mojito Studios also released a lengthy How to Play video:
Incubo’s high-concept premise immediately struck me. Transforming REM phases into obstacles, and sharing those dreams with your cat, is a clever twist for some familiar ideas. Battling your fears in a dream world with courage cards is a neat theme.
Although I may not especially enjoy push-your-luck, fans of the genre certainly should. I appreciate the way players interact together. The cards seem to be organically built to encourage teamwork.
It’s also nice that the designer went out of their way to develop a solo mode, making this game more flexible.
The gameplay in general appears to be very streamlined and friendly. Its cooperative and objective-based card play partly remind me of the tidy Legendary Encounters games.
Incubo’s art design also has a lot of personality, with moody imagery that has a handcrafted style and conjures ample mystery. It even feels reminiscent of other stylized, surreal games like Inside.
The artwork also strangely blends some fine shadowy details with cartoonish elements that border on vintage rubberhose characters, which is very eye-catching.
I do wish there were more content for the campaign’s pledge rates. But I haven’t played the game yet, and I already admire its world and structure.
