JUMUN – Will on the Blade, an open world action RPG from a solo developer, released another gameplay teaser via Twitter/X today. The developer regularly posts new footage featuring a variety of mechanics and stylish combat.
JUMUN does not have a Steam page, plot summary, or other precise details at this time. Consequently, it does not have a release window or date either. In fact, I couldn’t find the dev’s name via socials.
However, their consistent tweets do hint at potential game concepts. It is built in Unreal, and the developer also released a lengthy trailer last month. The YouTube trailer description includes the tag “soulslike.”
Although this trailer has been around for a while, I really wanted an opportunity to discuss this game.
The first thing that stood out to me was the movement. It is very clear that the developer understands both the fluidity of martial arts and the stylistic decisions that make you feel it on screen.
I am already impressed by the detailed animation and overall sense of energy. These nicely complement the bombastic combat, which features sparkling powers and similar characteristics.
Beyond combat itself, I appreciate that map traversal also echoes classic martial arts notions of weightlessness and balance. I’ve enjoyed the footage of soaring through the air and trekking across water perhaps more so than any of the battles.
The game also teases some fantasy elements, which mostly seem to involve oversized versions of familiar creatures thus far. This is a relief for a soulslike, which generally tend to share many of the same redundant qualities and ideas.
The visuals are stunning, especially for a single developer. I’m delighted to feel confident in this indie. So far, it promises to be everything that I hoped Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty would be. You can read the review for my full thoughts on that one.
