Become a shapeshifting sorcerer in Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game

Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game, a strategy tabletop game from Gonzalo Alvarez, has just launched a new Kickstarter campaign for its second edition. The updated version improves various quality-of-life features. It also includes brand-new content such as a solo/co-op mode and more.

In Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game, players are Nawalli, sorcerers who can shapeshift and summon various spirits and creatures from Aztec mythology. You’ll draft a unique deck of Nawals and spells to battle for lanes in an Arena and capture your opponent’s 13 Tonalli gems.

The upcoming Adventure Mode will let players battle against the game alone or cooperatively. The second edition also introduces a free-for-all mode for 4 players.

Here’s the previous Kickstarter trailer from Studio Tecuanis, which Alvarez founded in 2022:

Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game is distinctly a labor of love, with dedicated artwork that’s full of life. These characters absolutely leap off the board, and are clearly steeped in charming authenticity.

Being part Mexican, I definitely admire Nawalli’s researched approach and imaginative spins on Aztec mythology. However, I believe the colorful designs and streamlined mechanics should appeal to any mainstream audience.

Nawalli appears to successfully harness history and culture without feeling like an awkwardly academic exercise.

True, the gameplay has some familiar mechanics for the genre. But the abilities promise some thematic little twists, and anything too familiar comes off like homage.

The second edition also features more than enough improvements and additions to justify investing in the new Kickstarter.

Figuring out solo, co-op, and free-for-all modes was likely challenging, but they do drastically expand the potential fanbase. Co-op is also a friendlier way to play, and likely invites families to try this out, too.

While I haven’t had the chance to play the first edition, I’m pleased that the new campaign may help others discover this gem too.
