In a new post on Twitter, developer Goodwin Games teased more footage from indie adventure Selfloss, a fantasy RPG inspired by Slavic myths and imagery. It features a whale-worshipping world, magic, and an emotional center about grief.
In Selfloss, a healer journeys over land and sea to cure his soul. Players must battle mysterious Miasm enemies, guide their boat through rough waters, and solve puzzles to progress. You’ll also need to control a magical staff, which can even be operated independently.
There is currently no release date or window for Selfloss. However, the new tweet did hint at “exciting news,” which will possibly include new release details. In the same thread, developer Alex Goodwin added the game is coming to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Nintendo Switch.
The art design in Selfloss features charged, eye-catching visuals that seem to combine the best traits of Dredge, Inside, and Spirit of the North. But all of the trailers released thus far make it clear this is far more than “the one with the whales.”
The story seems to approach serious themes with a sincere touch. Players will “meet the various inhabitants of the world and bring a healers touch to ease their pain.”
For those who are uncertain if grief can successfully accompany a great adventure, consider the strong ratings for Tales of Kenzera: ZAU. Similarly, LBR previously reviewed The Forest Quartet, which also incorporated grief without losing entertainment value.
Selfloss promises to make the most of its Slavic inspiration. The trailers tease some creative creature design, and the magic is very distinct from comparable titles. I’m curious to see how moving around an independent, magical staff could tie into the puzzles. There’s an opportunity for some really inventive obstacles.
Though it might seem a bit gloomy for some, Selfloss is one of my most anticipated indies this year. Not to mention, the trailers’ music already sounds brilliant.
