The Eternaut, a sci-fi survival board game set in Buenos Aires from Pendragon Game Studio, officially launched a new Kickstarter campaign this week. The campaign is already fully funded about twice over. The game is an original story based on the comic of the same name.
In The Eternaut, a group of unlikely heroes must survive a deadly snowstorm as aliens invade. 1 to 5 players will work cooperatively to achieve story-driven objectives, discovering items and crafting essentials. There are 9 scenarios to unlock, with different paths for replay value.
Pendragon Game Studio released a full trailer for The Eternaut back in January, which reveals components and breaks down the core gameplay mechanics:
The Eternaut may already have an established fanbase from the comic, but the board game’s similar art design will definitely attract newcomers. Its bleak, war-torn, snowy setting adds a lot of personality to the traditional alien invasion and partly resembles The Thing.
The emphasis on storytelling is also sure to please co-op fans. It’s always entertaining to complete narrative campaigns together, especially when the decisions have notable consequences. Making hard decisions also fits the survival genre.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to play this yet. The Eternaut did recently build a lot of buzz with previews from the regulars like Dice Tower.
But the Kickstarter campaign offers some more interesting tidbits about the game and plans for the future.
The page reveals that “we have plans to release new online adventures in the future, so you could play using the components in your box.” The designers also encourage players to create their own stories.
I’m also interested in the emphasis on interacting with seemingly mundane, tangible objects. They make your surroundings feel more tactile. The point-and-click inspiration, Buenos Aires setting, and sci-fi angle promise a very fresh blend.
