Bon Appetit, a competitive card game about racing to cook your menu from Lazy River Games, has a new official Kickstarter campaign this week. At this time, the campaign is already half-funded.
In Bon Appetit, players compete to complete the meal on their menu first. Players share a deck of ingredients, taking turns cooking their cards together, playing tricks on each other, or trashing unwanted cards. Many cards have unique, strategic abilities.
Lazy River Games released a how-to-play trailer in January, which breaks down the key mechanics. The Kickstarter campaign page reveals the game supports 2 to 5 players, and matches should last around just 20 minutes.
I haven’t played Bon Appetit yet, but the trailer instantly grabbed my attention. The game boasts gorgeous artwork, which resembles vintage rubber hose-style animation akin to Cuphead.
The characters are full of life and promise a welcome sense of humor. That era of zany, larger-than-life animation also fits the intended pace of Bon Appetit.
Its overall presentation has the attitude of a family-friendly party game. Although, it also seems to encourage careful strategy and the suggested age is 14+.
The actions and cards revealed thus far look fairly streamlined, likely aiming for the kitchen chaos of Overcooked. But it remains to be seen if card abilities will slow things down a bit more than expected.
If the gameplay does turn out balanced enough, Bon Appetit could offer a smart blend of swift gameplay and devious planning. That would be ideal for hobbyists who don’t have much time through the week.
While there are many cooking-themed TTGs out there, these cards get pretty creative. For example, the Golden Spatula even spins the win condition.
On the Kickstarter page, Lazy River Games founder Richie Johnson adds that “we aim to release three more games, each progressively more complex than the last”.
