Modiphius reveals Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics wargame, Kickstarter coming in June

In a new press release, renowned publisher Modiphius announced Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics, a new horror-themed tabletop wargame that will officially launch a Kickstarter campaign next June.

In Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics, players will lead a powerful Legion during the height of Imperial Rome, waging war against eldritch enemies and the Outer Gods. You’ll need to upgrade your heroes’ experience and power, using strategy and detailed miniatures for story-driven battles.

Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics will support both solo and co-op gameplay. The story is set in the same universe as Cohors Cthulhu and Achtung! Cthulhu, Modiphius’ Lovecraftian TTRPGs.

The Cohors Cthulhu TTRPG held a successful Kickstarter last year, and surprisingly, its corresponding miniatures can be used in the new Tactics game. It marks a very neat connection between genres.

Today’s press release adds that the miniatures in Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics will conveniently “match the scale of leading historical miniatures manufacturers”.

Wargames are sort of a niche tabletop experience, but Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics could be far more accessible. Its crossroads of RPG storytelling, miniatures combat, and flexible player support is pretty novel.

The solo and co-op tabletop options will invite a much wider audience. Solo adventures often demand Mythic or a similar engine to replace the GM, so it’s always nice to see built-in solo support.

The eldritch horror theme is also friendlier than traditional military-oriented wargames, particularly alongside the ancient Rome backdrop.

Cohors Cthulhu: Tactics might seem like it risks pursuing too many angles at once. Fans of each genre might feel a bit hesitant about the game. But it does have an established universe to build on, and Modiphius has confidently published similar games before.

In fact, Rangers of Shadow Deep is already a standout miniatures game that also enables solo or co-op gameplay.

With so much connective tissue between Tactics and other releases, I’m very curious to see how the promising new story integrates miniature gameplay.
