Sherwood Extreme, an arcade third-person shooter from indie developer and publisher CAGE Studios, officially has a full release date slated for April 29th, 2024. The game has been in Early Access in 2021.
In Sherwood Extreme, players set out to save Robin Hood’s iconic kingdom. You’ll need to blend parkour with shooting skills, and level up your hero for new weapons and skills to defeat wacky enemies like goblins.
Sherwood Extreme has been in Early Access since 2021, and that version is available now on PC via Steam. It also has a playable demo on Steam, though I haven’t had the chance to play it yet. Here’s the official release date trailer from CAGE Studios:
In addition to the release date, CAGE Studios also teased that a level editor is coming to Sherwood Extreme’s full version. Since the game offers online co-op, this will add a lot of replay value.
CAGE Studios’ previous game is Sail and Sacrifice, an open world pirate RPG. It launched in 2019 to negative reviews, which criticized technical flaws.
However, Sherwood Extreme has spent a good while in Early Access, and does look promising.
CAGE Studios co-founders Gabriel Langlois and Salaar Kohari both have notable industry experience. In December, Kohari announced on Twitter that they left a “dream job” at Santa Monica Studio to make their own games. CAGE Studios is clearly an ambitious, bold move, and one that I admire.
Sherwood Extreme’s low-poly art design and silly tone are a smart approach for the devs’ next project. Its colorful, pulpy strangeness looks like it has the spirit of early thousands shooters, without indulging too much nostalgia.
The unique modes, co-op support, and level editor are welcome surprises. If the controls are smooth enough, Sherwood Extreme could tap into brisk party game appeal, akin to Gang Beasts.
