Escape From Ever After, a comedic adventure RPG from indie developer Sleepy Castle Studio and publisher HypeTrain Digital, has released a series of new gameplay teasers. The art design intentionally pays homage to Paper Mario.
In Escape From Ever After, fairytale heroes must fight back after a megacorp from the real world takes over their worlds. Players must explore storybook worlds, battle zany enemies with turn-based combat, and rally a unique party of fellow employees.
Sleepy Castle Studio has showcased a variety of enemies and mechanics over the last couple of weeks on Twitter. In a new post today, the devs teased the Big Bad Wolf and their abilities.
There are more than a few indies that borrow Paper Mario’s aesthetic. Fortunately, Escape From Ever After elaborates in some creative ways, specifically adding a unique sense of humor.
The basic premise is another clever jab at corporate behavior, a heated topic during this turbulent time in the gaming industry.
The subject just came up in my latest review of Time Rift, which focused on shady business practices. I’m also reminded of the tone in Stick it to the Stickman.
In Escape From Ever After, the villainous corporation is pursuing cheap labor, turning fantasy worlds into offices full of “mindless coffee-sipping, report-filing drones”.
I’m interested in discovering how corporate greed will weave into the various fairytale worlds. The Steam page does mention that the Three Little Pigs are bulldozing forests for real estate developments.
The teasers revealed throughout March already offer some neat visuals, despite a smaller budget. The environments are thoughtful, and have depth. Ideally, the storytelling will be equally deep. I hope to see wit and irony more so than obligatory criticism.
Escape From Ever After appears to be Sleepy Castle’s debut. However, HypeTrain Digital has published over a dozen games, most recently Vivaland: Dream House.
