Animal clans vie for power in Armello, now coming to tabletop

Armello, the strategic digital board game about anthropomorphic animals from indie developer and publisher League of Geeks, is getting an actual tabletop version.

Although the video game launched in 2015, a new board game adaptation launched a Kickstarter campaign today. It’s already fully funded, three times over. It will support 2 to 4 players, with game time estimated at 2-3 hours.

In Armello, animal clans scheme and battle to rule the Kingdom of Armello, a grim fairy tale world. In the new board game, players compete for prestige points, complete quests, manage gold, and build decks to battle each other.

The Armello board game Kickstarter page has an estimated delivery set for April 2025. However, these dates frequently change. The Armello video game originally launched in 2015.

Designer King of the Castle Games also released a new Kickstarter campaign trailer for the upcoming tabletop game:

Armello quickly calls Redwall to mind, the series of children’s fantasy novels. However, it has more edge, strong fantasy elements, and lore that distinguish it from similar genre staples.

In fact, its fascinating political machinations might also resemble the likes of Dune or Game of Thrones.

However, the Armello video game benefited from the novelty of its tabletop presentation. It made the most of the digital medium, justifying its experience over a straightforward board game.

As an actual board game, it loses that novelty. So, hopefully, the tabletop version finds its own stride and fresh personality.

Fortunately, the power flow of Armello was a highlight of the video game. Its gameplay does have many familiar mechanics. But the pacing, flavor, and balancing stand out.

The Kickstarter trailer looks very promising, with components that capture the splashy, yet grim world of the original game. The collector’s edition also has excellent table presence, and is probably worth the investment with the palace model alone.
