Metroidvania indie An Amazing Wizard coming to Kickstarter this week

An Amazing Wizard, a metroidvania roguelike from indie developer Jakub Dąbrowski and publisher Erabit, is launching a new Kickstarter campaign on March 8th, 2024.

In An Amazing Wizard, a child of prophecy must reclaim their memories and escape a dangerous world. Players will explore procedurally generated magical worlds, build their own spell combinations, and discover secrets across five unique levels.

Dąbrowski elaborated on their Kickstarter campaign in a new Steam post. The dev explained that their “disposable income is not enough to make the game I want to create”. They also mentioned interest in developing “the content that will be voted the most” after the campaign.

An Amazing Wizard is currently aiming for a Q4 2024 release, according to the Steam page. Erabit first announced An Amazing Wizard with a gameplay trailer last month:

I haven’t played the demo yet, but judging by this trailer, the gameplay in An Amazing Wizard resembles many staples of the genre. However, I was quickly attracted to its art design and sense of humor.

Many of the backgrounds look surprisingly detailed, creating distinguishable worlds that would justify exploration. The bosses are also clearly inspired, even if some of the minor enemies are a bit routine.

A child of prophecy and lost memories are also very familiar tropes. However, An Amazing Wizard seems interested in deliberately using these for its tongue-in-cheek tone.

The dialogue and imagery appear to be rather offbeat, in a charming way. It’s always amusing to see high fantasy characters use blunt, everyday language.

In the announcement trailer, the developer comes off as a fellow fan of the genre, celebrating it with you.

The Steam page mentions hundreds of ways to alter your spells, adding even more replay value to the procedural worlds. Although the screen seems a bit cluttered at times, I’m curious about this frenetic, playful indie.
