Melatonin, the hand-drawn rhythm game from indie developer and publisher Half Asleep, is officially coming to the PlayStation 5 on March 12th, 2024. Half Asleep announced the release date in a Twitter post, which included a new gameplay trailer.
In Melatonin, players need to keep the beat while exploring a world that blends reality and dreams. There are over twenty levels, each with their own surreal song to master. The game also includes a Practice Mode, and a friendly level editor on PC.
Melatonin originally launched in December 2022 to rave reviews, and is available now on PC and Nintendo Switch.
Melatonin already got plenty of attention with today’s trailer on the official PlayStation YouTube channel. However, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to discuss this gem, and support the devs.
Many rhythm games rely on the novelty of the genre alone. Better offerings include some minor twist, or a fresh world.
Melatonin is a standout that features a whole range of clever ideas for rhythm fans. It also has a compelling take on dreamworlds, with nuanced reflections on sleep and stress.
The art design alone sparkles with ingenuity, and there’s a witty, genuine sense of humor throughout. The hand-drawn artwork is lively, full of color and personality. The visuals are sure to thrive on the PlayStation 5.
Melatonin does play well as a mobile game on Switch. However, the story is also comforting and playful enough to cozy up to on the couch.
PlayStation fans will surely enjoy the port, assuming it functions properly. It’s an excellent opportunity for players to discover or revisit the game.
Hopefully, Melatonin will also come to Xbox sometime in the future. The Xbox Game Pass is a vast library that often welcomes indie games like this. And Melatonin definitely deserves the widest audience possible.
