Modiphius adapting Discworld series into tabletop games

Modiphius Entertainment, the tabletop publisher behind Skyrim: The Adventure Game and countless RPGs, will officially adapt the Discworld universe into new tabletop games.

Discworld is an iconic novel series from author Terry Pratchett, which focuses on fantasy and satire. The series includes dozens of books.

In a new press release, Modiphius announced it will “publish a tabletop roleplaying game around the city of Ankh-Morpork and the wider Disc”. A Kickstarter is planned for “late 2024”.

The press release teases “Tabletop Roleplaying Game and Board Games to be Published”. However, Modiphius did not confirm specific plans for the latter, just yet.

Modiphius has tackled many classic IPs before, from Star Trek to The Lord of the Rings. There’s also a lot of hype around Dune: Fall Of The Imperium, especially since the movie sequel premieres this week.

Discworld could be pretty tricky, since Pratchett had a very sharp, particular brand of humor. However, players already trust the publisher’s flexibility, even with daunting IP.

Fans should be pleased with this literary direction. Many of Modiphius’ previous games borrowed from cinema or gaming pop culture.

However, RPGs are innately story-driven, so I’m even more curious about potential board games.

Modiphius now has a ripe opportunity to satirize the current state of fantasy storytelling, which has evolved quite a bit since the last Discworld novel. There could also be some clever jokes about board game archetypes, too.

Surprisingly, Modiphius is holding a fan survey, inviting suggestions for “the games they will develop”. It’s a smart move to engage the community. Discworld is sort of a niche property, and readers might also be new to hobby gaming.

The artwork in today’s RPG promo image is gorgeous, so things are off to a promising start. This IP could result in some very fresh twists for tabletop fans.
