Puzzle platformer Sugamenia joins Steam, launch expected in 2024

SUGAMENIA, a 2D action platformer with puzzle elements from solo developer and publisher CHUSO GAMES, has just revealed its new official Steam page. It breaks down key gameplay features, and showcases a variety of screenshots.

In SUGAMENIA, space explorer Violet must survive after being marooned on an unknown planet. Players will need to solve puzzles, time their jumps, and master their weapon. You must also use the robotic drone Suichi to attack, reach new areas, and more.

SUGAMENIA does not have a concrete release date yet. However, the new Chuso Games website says that SUGAMENIA is “coming in Summer 2024”.

At this time, the game does not have an official gameplay trailer yet, but you can wishlist now.

Naturally, it’s hard to gauge the true style or performance of SUGAMENIA without a gameplay trailer. However, Chuso Games has released quite a few screenshots, and confirmed many notable details.

SUGAMENIA’s retro world looks rather familiar, but also very charming and colorful. It harkens back to a very specific gaming era, with a minimalist approach and some creative ideas.

I was first drawn to SUGAMENIA by the drone Suichi, an adorable little character with lots of potential. Suichi will probably be the highlight of the game, and I hope it turns out to be as flexible as the Steam page suggests.

The developer explains that Suichi “can deploy bombs, be used as a platform, [and] offer advice in order to find hidden treasures”.

Many platformers have a companion, and I always appreciate when they serve as more than a mascot. It gives players the chance to get strategic and creative in order to progress.

Hopefully, Chuso Games reveals some gameplay soon. Movement plays a large role in the genre, so ideally the budget won’t hinder that. But SUGAMENIA’s screenshots and concepts seem promising for a solo debut.
