Publisher tinyBuild announced Kingmakers today, a medieval action and strategy game from indie developer Redemption Road Games. The big reveal included a new trailer, featuring epic cinematics and gameplay.
In Kingmakers, a hero from the future must travel back in time to medieval England and alter history to avoid an apocalypse. You’ll need to win real-time battles by using strategy and modern-day equipment like assault rifles, armored SUVs and more.
Kingmakers doesn’t have a concrete release date yet. However, according to today’s Steam announcement post, the devs are “planning to launch Kingmakers in Early Access on Steam later this year”.
You can wishlist Kingmakers on PC via Steam now. It will support both solo and co-op. The gameplay is inspired by “Chivalry, [the] Stronghold series, World War Z, and so many more”.
Kingmakers’ high concept premise should instantly grab your attention. Blending classic medieval strategy with high-octane firepower sounds like pulpy fun.
Today’s trailer showcases stylish brutality and carnage that highlights how amusing and satisfying the time travel contrast could be.
And given the sheer scope of the combat, I appreciate the co-op support. Hopefully, Kingmakers will add new platforms and cross-play after the full release.
Kingmakers has “a next-gen multi-threaded AI” that controls thousands of unique soldiers at once. This mechanic could add incredible scale and realism, assuming it functions properly.
It’s smart to launch into Early Access. Everything about Kingmakers sounds ambitious, especially for a smaller team. Redemption Road Games describes itself as “a passionate 20-person dev team”.
The devs say they spent four years working on Kingmakers, and it seems to have paid off. The movement, combat, and perspective shifts all look very smooth.
Today’s trailer kicks off with a nod to Back to the Future, which instantly sells the playful tone and potential adventure in Kingmakers.
