An upcoming digital version of real-time tactics hit U-Boot: The Board Game has a new gameplay trailer, showcasing familiar features from the tabletop source material.
The digital version is being developed by Out Of The Ordinary and published by G11 Games. The tabletop game originally released in 2019 to strong reviews on BGG.
In U-Boot, players must successfully manage multiple warship crew roles and make critical decisions in real time. Set during World War II, you’ll need to complete missions and side quests, defeating enemy ships and tending to basic crew needs.
U-Boot: The Board Game – Digital Edition does not currently have a release date. However, fans of the genre can now register for playtests on PC via Steam.
UBOOT: The Board Game already featured a companion app. This helped apply the pressure of real-time gameplay and consequences. So, the mechanics themselves should translate well into a digital edition.
The Steam page currently lists the digital version as a single player experience. However, the tabletop game supported up to four players, each taking on a very unique role.
It could be a shame to lose that coordination and camaraderie, which was its own challenge. It also felt more immersive to exchange ideas and act on behalf of teammates.
But a digital edition could be more accessible for newcomers. The board game is pretty heavy, and is best reserved for experienced hobbyists. Also, although it supports solo, handling all four roles by yourself can prove difficult.
The sim genre has inflated a lot in the video game industry. Ideally, the digital edition will manage to distinguish itself from so many other WWII sims.
If the original weight carries over, that should go a long way. Either way, I hope that the digital edition will match the table presence and smooth flow of the tabletop game.
