Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge, a casual farming sim and creature collector from indie developer Humble Reeds and publisher Armor Games Studios, will officially launch in “mid 2024”.
The developers announced this in a new tweet, which also included a fresh gameplay trailer.
In Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge, players build a sanctuary for frogs and tend to their needs. There are hundreds of unique frogs to breed, feed, and raise. You’ll need to restore the local wetlands for them, decorate their habitat, and complete minigames.
Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge will be available on PC via Steam. You can wishlist now, and a demo is coming next week as part of Steam Next Fest.
The hand-drawn style of Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge instantly captured my attention. Its coloring book textures and earthy colors already promise a relaxing game with lots of cute factor.
I also appreciate the niche approach and emphasis on nature. Restoring wetlands has an environmental angle that invites more peaceful nature scenes. And cultivating the land itself is a compelling twist on traditional crops.
Many farming sims concentrate on decorating your house. Decorating an entire sanctuary would allow a bit more freedom, as well as larger items. Ideally, there will be lots of decorations that are specifically tailored for frogs.
The Steam page mentioned there are over 500 frogs to collect. That’s an impressive number of creatures for this sub-genre.
However, I’m curious about how many are simply unlocked by breeding instead of attracting them to your refuge. It would be tough to give so many creatures totally unique behavior. Fortunately, all of the frogs certainly look adorable either way.
Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge appears to be the debut title for developer Humble Reeds.
However, publisher Armor Games Studios has championed many other interesting indies. Some standouts include The Spirit and the Mouse and Bear and Breakfast.
