Puzzle platformer Airhead sets February release date in new trailer

Airhead, a metroidvania puzzle platformer from developers Octato and Massive Miniteam, will officially launch on February 12th, 2024. It will be available on PC, Amazon Luna, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In Airhead, players must save a small inflatable creature named Head by exploring a mysterious world and solving puzzles. You’ll need to use air cylinders to keep Head alive, and work with them to progress. There are also new abilities to unlock, and strange creatures to discover.

The new release date announcement trailer from publisher Handy Games also mentions plans for other ports.

It did not confirm an exact release date, but Airhead will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One “later on”.

Airhead already teases a dramatic and expressive art design throughout its trailers. It may call to mind other moody puzzle platformers like Planet of Lana or Inside.

Today’s release date trailer is unexpectedly story-driven and solemn, with muted colors and tragedy. It soundly sets up the premise, and showcases a really compelling world. I’m instantly curious about the potential lore.

The gameplay itself has been revealed in other trailers, even including a twenty minute overview from Handy Games. The devs also released a demo on PC via Steam in August 2023, though I didn’t get the chance to play it.

I always enjoy figuring out how to make two separate characters work together. And there is something equally surreal and cute about Head and Body, particularly in the way Head functions.

The detachable aspect naturally invites some fresh puzzles. The air cylinders and old technology in Airhead’s trailers also sort of create a touch of steampunk.

Head’s design also hints at some of the other potential creatures that players will uncover. There’s a bit of controlled chaos in Airhead’s strangeness, which I appreciate. The devs are onto something special, here.
