Reveil, a psychological thriller with surreal imagery and puzzles from developer Pixelsplit and publisher Daedalic Entertainment, will officially launch on March 6th, 2024.
It will be available on PC via Steam, as well as current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. There will be a Funhouse Edition with a soundtrack, audio plays, developer commentary and more.
In Reveil, players must explore a strange world inspired by a 1960’s circus, leading Walter Thompson in a search for his wife and daughter. As the surreal bleeds into your world, you’ll need to solve puzzles and riddles in this story-driven horror adventure.
Reveil may not surprise you with its premise, or even its setting. Searching for family and creepy circus imagery should both be very familiar to horror fans.
However, an authentic approach should give the vintage 60’s world a compelling mood. The Steam page mentions “atmospheric” paintings, posters, and more. With enough realism, there could be some excellent contrast as it erodes into the surreal.
Notably, the developer Pixelsplit most recently released Indoorlands in 2022. It’s a theme park sim with many traditional mechanics. But it still has positive reviews that praise the solid and streamlined gameplay.
So, don’t let the broader concepts in Reveil fool you. It still has plenty of potential, and may simply be coy about more interesting twists in order to maintain mystery.
According to the Steam page, Reveil will feature “deceptive impressions, memory fragments and mysterious visions”. So, I appreciate the emphasis on puzzles and riddles, which always benefit psychological stories.
There are also references to the protagonist’s dark past. I’m curious to see if Reveil’s themes will be deeply mature, and as grounded as the historical authenticity.
Accordingly, I do wish the Funhouse Edition’s black-and-white filter were offered in the base game, for more attitude and strangeness. But it looks promising as is, nonetheless.
