UK-based indie developer and publisher Radical Forge has just announced Southfield, a farming sim with wacky crops and physics.
The devs did not confirm a release date. However, you can now wishlist the game on PC via Steam. The Steam page mentions plans for an Early Access release that lasts “until Summer 2024”. So, that version is likely coming very soon.
In Southfield, players will complete quests, combine strange crops, automate a farm, and defend it from harsh weather or mischievous Ruffians. It also supports cooperative gameplay, so you can join up to three other players.
Radical Forge included a gameplay trailer alongside today’s announcement:
The basic premise of Southfield smartly combines some admittedly familiar ideas to great effect. It seems to offer a distinct sense of comedy and wonder. Its world is bright and magical, and the physics-based gameplay is a welcome surprise for the farming genre.
Southfield has a delightfully cozy tone in its art design, playful music, and even gameplay features.
There’s an apparent desire to surprise throughout Southfield. Inviting players to combine crops will definitely spice up the traditional farming grind.
And the game promises many customization options, for both cosmetics and construction. The sandbox tools certainly look flexible at this time, judging by the trailer. There are curved pieces, unique materials, and functioning doors.
Also, automated farming is always a helpful way to indulge the sim genre without making crops a long-term chore.
In other words, Southfield seems inherently friendly, so it was wise to offer co-op support.
It was also a good move to add quests. These should give players some actual structure, rather than relying on typical open world mechanics. I’m interested in the storytelling Southfield could offer.
Radical Forge previously developed Bright Paw: Definitive Edition in 2020, a puzzle adventure about solving murder while playing as the family cat.
