Fate: Defenders of Grimheim, a co-op adventure board game inspired by Norse mythology from FryxGames, launched a new campaign on Kickstarter today and is already fully funded.
In Fate: Defenders of Grimheim, players must work together to defend Freyja’s well as Loki attacks with a variety of monsters. Defeating monsters gives you experience for upgrades, and there are also quests to complete. Each playable hero offers unique abilities and quest options.
The new Kickstarter campaign currently lists an estimated delivery for October 2024. According to a new tweet from FryxGames, designer Jonathan Fryxelius developed Fate: Defenders of Grimheim for 15 years:
FryxGames is a Swedish family company best known for Terraforming Mars, the classic engine builder about CEOs competing to make an empire on Mars.
Similarly, Fate: Defenders of Grimheim also features a broad, familiar theme. But its art design seems to offer a lot more effort, as well as a noticeable sense of fun.
Its world is full of colorful heroes and enemies, so it’s no surprise the illustrators noted a “passion for cartoons and kids entertainment” in the campaign page.
A humorous approach would definitely help distinguish Fate from so many Viking and Norse-themed games.
Notably, the marketing also seems delightfully tongue-in-cheek. That’s particularly true in the way the campaign trailer and “Meet the Heroes” section describe the underdog heroes.
I would definitely appreciate if the quests featured more wacky dialogue, and stories that swing for the fences.
Tower defense games rarely have a narrative to begin with, so quests should help spice up the loop, especially for one board. I’m curious to see how quests incorporate classic Norse mythology.
Terraforming Mars transcended its basic theme with dense gameplay that smartly rewarded long-term strategy. Similarly, if the action in Fate: Defenders of Grimheim can live up to its style, players should be in for a treat.
