Just A Guy, a casual platforming adventure from indie developer and publisher Monky Games, has released a series of new gameplay trailers on the official Twitter account over the last week.
Today’s teaser features new climbing animation in an apparent nod to vintage Tomb Raider.
In Just A Guy, players explore a variety of themed worlds with physics-based characters. You’ll need to search for keys to progress, and you can collect coins to update your cosmetics. There are also mini-levels to discover, each with unique gameplay mechanics.
The developer also goes by David and @MonkyGamesDavid, a solo dev from France. Just A Guy currently doesn’t have a release date, but you can wishlist now on PC via Steam.
The dev also mentioned in a recent Twitter thread that their “ultimate goal would be to release on console”.
Just A Guy already looks very charming, with excellent physics animation and a splashy art design. The colors are vibrant and sugary, and the world is partly surreal.
These elements appear to be inspired by Fall Guys and Human Fall Flat, perhaps with a dash of Totally Reliable Delivery Service.
Human Fall Flat is a personal favorite, so I’m naturally drawn to other ragdoll puzzle platformers. But the dev did address the similarities directly:
Just A Guy also features split-screen cooperative gameplay, a rare feature that reinforces its friendly attitude.
However, Just A Guy features characters, vehicles and items that more closely resemble a toy chest.
Accordingly, the gameplay has some impressive freedoms and a wacky disposition, akin to a playground. Though I haven’t played the game, there is already something inherently youthful and cozy about Just A Guy.
The developer is also working on It’s OK to Fail, a side-scrolling platformer coming Q1 2024. It’s clear they have a good eye for physics-based gameplay, which bodes well for Just A Guy.
