Littlelands, a cute exploration and farming game from indie developer Rafael Martin and publisher Apogee Entertainment, released more work-in-progress gameplay today. About a minute long, it showcases some new animations, activities, and fauna.
In Littlelands, players explore the world for new challenges, characters, and treasure. You can also relax and farm, craft items, or decorate, among other familiar life sim activities.
Littlelands does not have a release date yet, but Apogee Entertainment just announced last week that a playable demo is coming this summer. The game will be available on PC via Steam, but the devs have not confirmed support for other platforms.
Littlelands doesn’t exactly aim to reinvent the genre, judging by early teasers and the features listed on Steam.
Many of its ideas will call to mind staples like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley. The latter included some dangerous dungeon crawls, and Littlelands bills itself as an action-adventure with enemy “goblinetes”.
However, its unusual art design is truly striking and already pops right off the screen. It has a clay-like texture that is undeniably adorable.
It partly captures the thrill of your arts and crafts projects from early childhood. Or at least, how we imagined them to be.
In this way, it resembles some of the recent diorama-style indies that blend leaping colors and dreamy visuals with realistic lighting. A comparable art style might be something like LEGO Bricktales.
Littlelands’ Steam page also mentions you will meet a variety of “quirky inhabitants”. Hopefully, they will have at least half as much personality as their visual design. The people and other creatures each feel unique, thoughtful, and full of life.
However, Littlelands is listed as a single-player game on Steam. So, it won’t have the multiplayer avenue that Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley offer. It’d be nice to share adventures in a world this charming.
