Surreal indie Skaramazuzu teases creepy world and characters

Skaramazuzu, a hand-drawn 2D adventure through a surreal world from indie developers Bleeding Moon Studio and Iphigames, has released new teasers on Twitter featuring key characters.

Each teaser showcases new art for the strange NPCs and locations you’ll discover. Today’s included a dog named “Dragon”, one of the cuter characters in a gothic world.

In Skaramazuzu, players must lead the lost soul Zuzu through a bizarre, black-and-white world to find the meaning of their existence. You will explore over 20 unique areas, solving riddles and meeting unusual locals to learn more about the world.

Skaramazuzu doesn’t currently have a release date, but you can wishlist on Steam now. You can also watch a recent trailer for Skaramazuzu from a couple of weeks ago:

Each of these teasers is filled with artwork that is downright fascinating. The world and its inhabitants seem equally cozy and off-putting, which is very much like a genuine dream.

The Creature’s voice in the trailer above might simply sound like a garbled amateur for some. But there is an oddball Twin Peaks-style appeal to it. Paired with the surrounding sound effects and imagery, it just feels intentional and experimental to me.

In fact, the visuals are already so compelling, they will likely mask the budget. But that remains to be seen, as I haven’t played the game yet.

The Steam page does mention “highly-tuned” and “casual” controls to begin with. Skaramazuzu appears to aim for a drifting mystery, with a wandering pace overall.

The hand-drawn efforts are undoubtedly impressive, and swiftly capture your imagination. So, hopefully the central mystery and dialogue will support the expectations they set. There is certainly a lot of potential.

Skaramazuzu appears to be a debut for Iphigames. But Bleeding Moon Studio has previously worked on Purrfectly Hidden Cats – Kittenwood, a hidden object game with positive ratings.
