Two-person development team Square Glade Games has revealed a series of in-progress images and footage for a cozy, untitled survival game in recent months. The devs have even been open to feedback.
Today, they showcased a new teaser of a wind turbine mechanic that players can use to charge their electric camper van.
The devs are planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign sometime soon. The pre-launch Kickstarter page reveals a few details about the premise.
Players will need to use their camper van to “live sustainably off-grid” in the near future.
Square Glade Games is best known for Above Snakes, a Western-themed open world base builder. Fans of the genre responded well, and its relaxing pace subverted expectations. But those who expected something more action-packed might have been disappointed.
Similarly, the devs’ new survival game looks more like a solarpunk vacation than a typical, hardcore test of your will.
The bright art design suggests that your isolation should create calm rather than desperation. However, you’ll likely still have to generate and maintain resources.
The gameplay might resemble Above Snakes, given the vast, open setting and exploration themes.
However, it doesn’t seem to share the same RPG elements. Unless there are other survivors to discover, the gameplay loop might need to be more elaborate.
It still isn’t clear why players need to survive off-grid to begin with. Since the game is set in the near future, there might be a catastrophic event to uncover.
This would be a great excuse for the technology, as well as constant travel. The devs specifically mentioned travel in a previous tweet. You might also be journeying to reunite with someone.
While few details are known, the devs have been open about their process. And early images already have the same effort and minimalist charm as Above Snakes.
