Cyra and the Beacon Path, a 2D precision platformer from indie developer and publisher Up Down Interactive, has released a new holiday-themed teaser. It features an underwater stage and key gameplay mechanics.
It is also just one of many teaser trailers that have been regularly posted on the game’s official Twitter account.
In Cyra and the Beacon Path, players must lead Cyra across seven unique worlds on a mission to find her father. Each world presents new obstacles, creatures, collectibles, and answers. There is also a speed-challenge mode for players who really enjoy testing their skills.
Cyra and the Beacon Path doesn’t have a release window yet. But you can wishlist the game on Steam, where there is also a playable demo.
The Up Down Interactive Twitter account mentions Celeste as an inspiration, and that does show. However, the first thing that caught my eye was Cyra and the Beacon Path’s distinguishable worlds.
They look so vibrant, balancing many different themes, colors, and life. They also combine multiple shades and textures, which feels more natural.
These features also promise a sense of lived-in history. This should make the stranger elements a lot more enjoyable. And Cyra does seem to indulge the right kind of strangeness, by blending in the familiar.
Notably, the Steam page also has a “hand-drawn” tag, and that artistry should be prioritized more in the marketing.
At this time, the movement animation still looks a little stiff, but the game doesn’t even have a release window yet. The developers will surely take the time to ensure the controls are functional and intuitive.
Cyra and the Beacon Path doesn’t seem to have too many twists for the genre. But the teasers already showcase charming artwork, fluid stage design, and fun lore that will likely give platforming fans what they want. So, be sure to check out the other posted teasers.
