Sports indie Driftwood adds Winter Update with Snowy Map and more

Driftwood, a game about a longboarding sloth drifting downhill from indie developer and publisher Stoked Sloth Interactive, has a new Winter Update available today.

The update features a brand-new Snowy Mountains wildcard map set at a ski resort. It’s accompanied by a matching Snowskate board and a warm hat cosmetic.

To celebrate the season, Driftwood is also currently on sale via Steam at nearly half price. The sale will last through January 4th, 2024.

Driftwood originally launched into Early Access last June, and is available now on PC. The devs have not confirmed a release window for the full version.

On Steam, they mention Driftwood will leave Early Access “once we feel the amount of content is right – no earlier, no later”.

The devs have regularly added new content updates every couple of months since Driftwood launched into Early Access, including the Autumn Rush wildcard map for Halloween. The team is already working on the next fully featured map.

The indie swiftly caught my attention with its unconventional tone. The gameplay aims for a soothing rhythm rather than high-octane stunts, which is refreshing for the genre.

In fact, Driftwood avoids freestyle tricks, instead encouraging players to simply concentrate on the path and their balance.

The devs took a minimalist approach for the art design, music, and sound effects. Also, the settings feel open and vast in scope. This should make it easy for players to genuinely relax.

So, Driftwood is an excellent choice for the holidays, especially with the unexpected new map.

The snowy environment clearly called for new effects, and the devs do mention “adapted physics and particles for snowskating” in today’s Steam update.

The game has recently accumulated overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam. Since Driftwood is in Early Access, it doesn’t have much content. But at the sale price, it might be the right time to invest ahead of a full launch.
