Biomorph, a metroidvania where players turn into the enemies they defeat, will officially launch in Q1 2024 according to a new tweet. A previous announcement trailer originally had it slated for this year.
In Biomorph, you’ll explore a fallen civilization to learn more about the hero’s origins. Players need to solve puzzles, upgrade their character, and master a variety of weapons. After defeating an enemy, you can take that enemy’s form and use their skills. There’s also a city to rebuild, with NPCs and even customization options.
Biomorph will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, where you can try a playable demo.
Here is today’s full statement, which adds that more big updates will be announced “in the coming weeks”:
Biomorph’s hook may not be totally novel, but it definitely serves the setting well. The art design is rather grim, full of rain, neutrals, and the bizarre. Everything looks worn and rugged. The environments and characters all feel a bit askew, in a good way.
At times, Biomorph naturally shows its budget, particularly in its movement. However, the narrative and gameplay features have a wider scope than you might expect at first glance. I appreciate the imaginative hand-drawn world and breadth of content.
Rebuilding and customizing the city of Blightmoor is a nice surprise. But it’s unclear just how much freedom players will have.
Either way, it’s a welcome feature that makes the world more interactive and immersive. It’ll also encourage players to pace themselves and absorb their surroundings. In context, rebuilding a city gives you a nice sense of progress, too.
Biomorph appears to be very mindful of the player, between its friendly features and hand-drawn world. For example, previously mimicked creatures will evolve to add intrigue when you backtrack. The thoughtful approach should pay off in the long run.
