Bahnsen Knights, the next pulp fiction visual novel in the esteemed series from indie developer LCB Game Studio, will push its console release to January 18th, 2024. Supported platforms will include the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.
The full launch on PC will remain scheduled for December 14th, 2023. There is also currently a playable demo on the official Steam page.
Surprisingly, the developers explain there was a misunderstanding about the console submission deadlines for a December release:
In Bahnsen Knights, players must infiltrate a dangerous cult in order to find their friend, set against 1980’s USA. You’ll need to make tough decisions and solve puzzles in order to survive this interactive narrative.
It is deeply unfortunate that the console versions appeared to be ready for launch, and will miss the initial release. Naturally, wider releases benefit indie games with easier access.
At the very least, the devs offered a concrete new release date, and the delay isn’t especially long.
LCB Game Studio has already made a big impression with the likes of Mothmen 1966 and Varney Lake.
Their interactive fiction games boast an extraordinary art design. The imagery feels authentic without losing the will to innovate.
It’s a balancing act that works because it always serves the game, rather than the other way around. That’s a trick that many developers miss. And it certainly continues to impress in gameplay trailers for Bahnsen Knights.
That will play a crucial role in successfully closing out a perfect trilogy, since the gameplay is hinged on compelling visuals.
Bahnsen Knights also features a great premise, charged with the potential to take risks and indulge a larger scope.
The Steam page mentions biblical storms, which seems a bit more epic than previous games. However, the story still appears to offer a personal and thoughtful angle, which should improve the stakes and investment.
