River Tails: Stronger Together, an asymmetrical co-op platformer from Kid Onion Studio, will launch onto PC on December 14th, 2023, according to a new release date trailer. It showcases a variety of puzzles, enemies, and levels.
In River Tails: Stronger Together, players must coordinate as a cute, unlikely pair. Furple the kitten traverses by land, while Finn the fish travels underwater, on a quest to rescue Furple’s family. There are puzzles, unique boss fights, time trials, and adorable cosmetics to discover. A single-player mode is also available.
River Tails: Stronger Together is expected to launch onto Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch later on. Today’s new trailer was released on publisher Gravity Game Arise’s YouTube channel:
River Tails’ art design immediately stands out in its trailers. Its natural world is full of color and cozy textures that create a playful and cartoonish tone. There’s also incredible lighting, with some elements of a cel-shaded style.
Judging by its trailers, River Tails promises a sense of wonder and personality throughout, from its fauna to its obstacles.
Most notably, the characters are very expressive, through their animation and faces alike. In fact, their expressions sometimes remind me of vintage cartoons, akin to Cuphead.
But overall, the game quite resembles Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara, mixed with the zany tone and difficulty of It Takes Two.
Despite River Tails’ adorable facade, its obstacles actually look a bit challenging. They seem to move quickly, so any timing will likely take practice. The official Steam page also mentions that the difficulty and complexity will scale as you progress.
I appreciate the ingenuity and variety the devs have mustered with such a familiar setting, and the full release plans to add another four worlds. Even the camerawork cleverly toys with perspective. River Tails: Stronger Together is shaping up to be a highlight of the genre this year.
