Blue Bird’s Song, an indie visual novel from Purple Meadows Studio, has released an official Steam page today. It explains the premise and central themes, and includes a brief gameplay trailer. Fans of the genre can wishlist the game.
In Blue Bird’s Song, Birdie must survive a nightmarish fantasy world after her idyllic romance goes terribly awry. There are three storylines to discover, where player decisions will impact the outcomes. The world was inspired by the classic dark fairy tale Blue Beard.
There is currently no release window for Blue Bird’s Song, nor any word on support for other platforms. However, it is “coming soon” according to today’s Steam page. Here’s the full Steam announcement from the developer’s official Twitter feed:
Blue Beard is an iconic thriller with some fairly intense themes. So, the imagery from Blue Bird’s Song that has been revealed thus far looks tamer than one might expect. However, today’s Steam page confirms the narrative can feature murder, suicide, and similar violence.
I appreciate the capacity for a somber, mysterious tone, and it will be interesting to see just how far the narrative could punish you for your decisions. I speculate that Birdie might very well fail to escape altogether in the right circumstances.
At times, the art design shows its budget, with oddly cartoonish elements. But there are quite a few striking scenes in the Steam trailer, and they appear to be hand drawn. As you might know, I find hand-drawn artwork naturally appealing. The environments in particular have some standout textures.
Aside from the fairy tale influence, Blue Bird’s Song also features the authentic personality of France, where the developers are based. That voice goes a long way in distinguishing Blue Bird’s Song from so many other visual novels. However, while it has potential, more trailers would definitely help form proper expectations.
