According to an official blog released today, CMON will publish a new board game based on God of War, with plans for crowdfunding in 2024 and a retail release in mid-2025. CMON partnered with Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment for the game.
Today’s blog is considerably vague, and doesn’t discuss gameplay. However, it does mention that CMON’s board game adaptation will use the 2018 game’s “setting as inspiration”. This implies that it may involve some original storylines, although miniatures of Kratos and Atreus were revealed.
CMON previously published God of War: The Card Game in 2019. Here’s the full announcement tweet about the new board game from CMON’s official feed:
God of War: The Card Game was somewhat divisive, partly due to some clunky rules and balancing issues. However, its thematic elements are very effective, particularly with the novel scene system.
It’s likely that the casual tone was intended to accommodate video game fans, who might otherwise ignore tabletop. So, it’s strange that the rules were a bit overcomplicated for most.
Fortunately, it seems like the new board game adaptation could have more tabletop flexibility. Today’s blog specifically refers to the “feel” of God of War, and it showcases two detailed miniatures:
CMON’s trademark miniature quality remains consistent with these gorgeous, refined figures. They are wonderfully expressive, full of personality and movement. More so than some of CMON’s mainstream hits like Marvel United, which has terrific minis to begin with.
This approach signals that fans might expect more of a hobby experience compared to CMON’s previous deckbuilder. The enemies could be glorious, considering CMON’s Cthulhu: Death May Die.
God of War is a classic action game suited for CMON’s house blend of intuitive, streamlined gameplay and quality components. The opportunity to further expand God of War’s world, rather than strictly following existing material, also genuinely intrigues me.
