Action roguelite Hell Throne sets November release date

Hell Throne, a roguelite featuring bullet hell action and voxel-style art from BoomBit, will officially launch on November 15th, 2023. It will be available on Steam, where you can wishlist and try out a playable demo now.

In Hell Throne, players will battle against a variety of monsters in a cartoonish version of the underworld. You’ll use hack-and-slash combat, dodging, and a variety of upgrades to survive. The gameplay supports local co-op for up to four players.

There’s currently no word on plans for other supported platforms. Here is today’s Steam release date announcement, from Hell Throne’s official Twitter account:

I generally feel inundated and bored with Hell Throne’s genre, which has struggled to find compelling new angles. And although Hell Throne doesn’t seem to revolutionize much compared to its peers, I find its tremendous sense of style very appealing.

The innate contrast of its world looks delightful, as seen in today’s trailer between the hardcore soundtrack and some cute voxel art. The zany gameplay looks weirdly friendly, especially with the opportunity to join together in co-op.

There’s something naturally amusing about the blend of its silly action and stark premise. It partly accomplishes this by refusing to become an outright parody.

The enemies in today’s trailer look creative, and don’t fit the obligatory mold of Hell Throne’s theme. I also find the graphics to be unusually polished, especially without a larger dev team. That could balance out the inevitable visual noise in all bullet hells.

There also seems to be a decent range of gameplay, including mini-games and the potential for other modes.

I haven’t played the Hell Throne demo. But given the trailers, it promises some casual co-op chaos and a stylish world that would probably be fun to explore in any genre. That might be enough to stand out from so many comparable games.
