Astromeda, an RPG that blends turn-based and real-time action from solo developer Liran Kamisa, is officially “coming to Steam” next week according to a new tweet from the game’s official account.
In Astromeda, astronauts return to Earth following an asteroid disaster, which decimated life on the planet and created a new alien race of bacteria-based beings. Players will explore different areas on the new Earth, befriending or battling the locals thorough turn-based combat and real-time dodging.
Astromeda is expected to launch onto PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. You can watch an old Kickstarter gameplay trailer on Astromeda’s official YouTube channel:
Although Astromeda held a successful campaign on Kickstarter earlier this year, today’s announcement likely isn’t referring to a release date. Instead, it’s probably referring to an official Steam page with details and a playable demo. A Steam demo has been teased on the Twitter account’s bio for some time.
The dev only just shared a new title screen today, shortly following the Steam announcement:
Astromeda sometimes shows its budget, naturally. But its sheer quirkiness really stands out to me. It seems downright determined to blend the unexpected, freely toying with genres and ideas.
However, I sense it isn’t just for the sake of subverting expectations. It seems like there’s simply a lot of imagination at work, demanding many different features. Hopefully, this doesn’t turn out too messy, because Astromeda’s boldness definitely has potential.
There’s an especially unique game flow with the combat system, which adds real-time action to turn-based decisions. There are also puzzles, mini games, hidden rooms, and lots of NPCs to discover.
Together, they promise to compose a cute little oddity with lots of freedom. It should be an absolute delight to explore Astromeda’s world, assuming everything will be balanced and function properly. The soundtrack also deserves a lot of praise for underlining the charm in this indie.
