Spirit of the North, the moody adventure about a fox in Iceland, is officially getting a sequel from returning indie developer Infuse Studio and publisher Merge Games. The upcoming sequel was announced with a new cinematic and gameplay trailer.

In Spirit of the North 2, players will lead a fox and their accompanying raven through an ancient world inspired by Nordic folklore. Players will need to uncover runes to upgrade their abilities, and solve some light puzzles on a journey to free mystical guardian beasts.

Spirit of the North 2 doesn’t have a release date, but it’s “coming soon” according to today’s new reveal trailer. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the Merge Games YouTube channel:

Spirit of the North had terrific atmosphere, with compelling cultural influence in its lore and world. There’s a lot of meticulous self-expression in it, and I always find that level of sincerity very intriguing and rewarding.

The natural environments were creatively designed and highly detailed, so it’s smart for the sequel to emphasize exploration. Today’s trailer showcases some equally gorgeous vistas, with the same sense of grandeur and mystery.

Fortunately, the sequel’s official Steam page mentions an open world. Hopefully, it will have an equally imaginative setting that gives the lore more context and weight.

Spirit of the North had a fairly cozy tone, especially with the beauty of isolated nature and a relaxing soundtrack. They helped create the signature ambiance that made the first game memorable.

The new trailer similarly features slow, soothing music that creates wonder rather than boredom. The improved graphics are also very noticeable, and sure to feel more immersive.

I’m very interested in this sequel, which already promises to capitalize on the opportunity for more quality of life improvements, depth, and ambition.
