While Waiting, an equally comedic and serious game that is literally about waiting from indie developer and publisher Optillusion, is now available to wishlist on Steam. The Steam page explains many key details, including the central themes and gameplay.
In While Waiting, players will explore the main character’s entire life, which is broken down into over a hundred different waiting scenarios. You’ll only be able to progress through each situation with genuine patience. But the adventure will have a story, with a sense of humor and thoughtful messages.
While Waiting does not currently have a release date or window. Here’s the announcement tweet about the new Steam page, which includes a teaser trailer:
I can’t help but think of similar experimental indies like THE LONGING, another game about waiting that lasts 400 actual days. While Waiting also seems to have a touch of Seinfeld, a show “about nothing”, as well as American Splendor comics.
Still, While Waiting has its own little novelties, and the premise remains quite daring. Observing life as a vignette of waiting could actually invite some legitimate laughs and introspection. It’s possible the gameplay partly reflects how we spend our leisure time with gaming itself.
Hopefully, While Waiting will function well as both a personal experiment and a video game, with satisfying payoffs and layered poignancy. This is going to be a tough magic trick to pull off.
However, the teaser trailer in today’s tweet has some great footage. The art design is gorgeous, and the classical music may be a little rote, but it offers the perfect kind of humorous context the game needs.
Optillusion has found previous success with the puzzle oddity Moncage, which cleverly toys with points of view. So, they have experience with strangeness, and I look forward to playing and pondering While Waiting.
