Crystal-punk platformer LUCID launches on Kickstarter today

LUCID, an upcoming platformer RPG set in a “crystal-punk world” from developer The Matte Black Studio and publisher Apogee Entertainment, has officially launched its Kickstarter campaign today.

In LUCID, the young Oenn journeys to revive the Lucid Giant Aylo and restore balance in the world of Aedyn. Players will master and customize the abilities of the Crystal Arts, in order to overcome a variety of 2D obstacles and unique enemies.

LUCID will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist now. There’s currently no word on support for other platforms. Here’s the official Kickstarter launch post, which includes a gameplay trailer:

LUCID is one of many 2D platformers full of nostalgia and heart. But it has smartly woven in a gorgeous crystal theme.

Crystals make for naturally appealing visuals, because they’re both earthy and beautiful. The devs have cleverly incorporated them into the settings, character design, and powers of LUCID, giving the lore and mechanics an outstanding flavor. The artwork looks lush, inventive, and highly thematic.

The premise about restoring balance to a magical world might seem a little rote. But LUCID’s Steam page mentions some interesting tidbits like the Celestial Fabric, and the characters seem to have distinct personalities.

LUCID has also closely integrated its traditional platforming attacks with mobility, a modern angle that looks to offer a sense of freedom.

In this way, it’s almost akin to brawlers like Smash Bros., and mastering multi-purpose combat always feels more rewarding. Players are encouraged to get creative with their movement by applying the moves and upgrades they prefer, rather than simply adapting to various enemies as needed.

The devs have openly noted that LUCID is a love letter to the games they grew up with. The Steam page references Mega Man, Zelda and even beloved film Princess Mononoke. But thus far, there appears to be a pretty healthy dose of nostalgia and twists.
