Dark fantasy indie The Golden Eyed Ghosts previews new boss fight

The Golden Eyed Ghosts, a dark fantasy adventure from indie developer Syphono4 and publisher Freedom Games, has just released a small teaser for a mid-game boss fight. While brief, it marks the most activity since the game appeared at Steam Next Fest last June.

In The Golden Eyed Ghosts, the exiled warrior Orion journeys through the kingdom of Andromeda in search of four legendary swords, to prevent certain doom. Players will also make tough moral decisions that “dictate the way forward”.

The Golden Eyed Ghosts hasn’t confirmed a release date, but it’s expected to launch this year on PC. You can watch today’s new teaser featuring the boss “Lievin” in a new Twitter post:

For a gameplay overview, you can revisit the Kickstarter trailer from publisher Freedom Games, which released back in March:

The Golden Eyed GhostsSteam page openly mentions the influences of Dark Souls and Zelda, both of which have many clones. The protagonist Orion is also looking to restore memories and uncover secrets, so there are some tropes here.

But The Golden Eyed Ghosts shouldn’t feel redundant. The epic narrative scale and flashy tone somewhat have an Arthurian flavor, even in its cinematics and music. This is partly reinforced by today’s teaser, which features more of a knightly duel. It’ll be interesting to see how Kingsguard Lievin’s behavior evolves.

However, The Golden Eyed Ghosts‘ adventurous, metroidvania side is balanced with the doom and gloom of its moral ambiguity. The protagonist is not an outright hero, some NPCs can’t be trusted, and player choices could have serious consequences.

This is the aspect that really intrigued me, as it emphasizes storytelling, and the age and mystery of Andromeda do have a lot of potential. And while the environments feel rather familiar, the character design is top notch, with memorable enemies and interesting attacks.
