SoulQuest teases Celtic mythology and action, demo coming soon

SoulQuest, an upcoming hack-and-slash platformer inspired by Celtic mythology from developers SoulBlade Studio and Tomas Pereyra, has posted a new trailer. Though brief, it features key gameplay abilities, enemies, stages and more.

In SoulQuest, the hero must battle enemy creatures and Celtic gods, seeking the power of Morrigan, the Goddess of Death, in order to retrieve the soul of their dead husband.

SoulQuest does not currently have a release date, but it will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist now. Today’s post also mentions that a “newer demo”, presumably improving on the existing Itch demo, is slated to arrive in three weeks:

The visuals in today’s trailer immediately caught my attention. SoulQuest’s official Steam page notes that the environments were hand-crafted.

The details certainly boast some noticeable skill, with green foregrounds that look like gently brushed paintings. The combat and magical effects also pop, capturing lots of energy.

However, it’s the basic premise that intrigues me the most. The influence of Celtic mythology is a niche, vast starting point. It’ll be exciting to see how SoulQuest translates the gods or creatures, and introduces them to players who are likely unfamiliar.

There are more than enough Viking games to go around. If SoulQuest fully commits to Celtic mythological references and culture, it will definitely have a worthwhile and distinct flavor. Although, the Steam page also nods to Arthurian legends.

SoulQuest should also make for an accessible game. Hack-and-slash games are innately friendly. Today’s teaser showcases some fairly straightforward combat with neat combos, as well as very light platforming.

Overall, SoulQuest seems to promise cozy gameplay, a light sense of humor, and a rich world that should prove very fun to explore. The demo will likely give players a better idea about the state of the game and when to expect a release window.
