“Quadroids” teases 4-screen platforming in reveal trailer

Quadroids, an indie puzzle platformer from developer Blue Loop, has just revealed its first official gameplay trailer. It features a brief overview of the game, including the premise that players will need to progress through four different screens at the same time.

In Quadroids, players are a robot overlord bent on taking over the galaxy. You’ll need to simultaneously coordinate four minions in each of their unique screens, progressing through over a hundred challenging levels.

Quadroids has not confirmed an exact release date yet, but it’s expected to launch sometime this year. It will be available on PC via Steam, and though it plans on console releases, the platforms haven’t been specified.

Quadroids may be hinged on a gimmick, but it’s undoubtedly an interesting one, with enormous creative potential. Today’s trailer shows off just a few stages, and while some appear relatively simple, it’s clear the game could escalate quickly over a hundred levels.

While there are plenty of familiar platforming obstacles, it’ll be more compelling to see just how disjointed the four different screens are willing to get. The Steam page mentions that Quadroids’ stages are interconnected, but increasing division in the level design would be really neat.

Today’s trailer also shows how players will need to sacrifice minions at times, which leans into the sense of humor. Quadroids wisely refuses to take itself seriously, both visually and conceptually.

The main character is a villain, which could lead to some genuine and unexpected laughs, perhaps akin to Cult of the Lamb. The narration in today’s trailer also reinforces this approach.

The pixel art looks nice enough, but it’s pretty straightforward, and doesn’t seem to create a very distinguishable, thematic world. But the novelty of the loop will surely intrigue fans of the genre.
