3D Platformer “Boti: Byteland Overclocked” is coming to PC in September

Boti: Byteland Overclocked, a retro 3D platformer set inside a computer from developer Purple Ray Studio and publisher Untold Tales, will officially launch onto PC on September 15th, 2023. The announcement coincided with a new trailer that showcases key gameplay and characters.

In Boti: Byteland Overclocked, a trio of heroes journey to rescue Byteland from bugs, viruses, and glitches. Players will need to master old school platforming and modern twists alike. The game will also support drop-in, drop-out co-op.

Boti: Byteland Overclocked will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It also plans to launch on other platforms early next year, but those release dates have not been confirmed. You can watch today’s new release date trailer on Untold Tales’ YouTube channel:

There have been a lot of retro 3D platformers appealing to my inner child lately, such as Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara. There’s always a fine line between loving homage and nostalgia bait, and Boti: Byteland Overclocked delicately toes that line with a few modern influences.

Today’s trailer shows off a magnetism mechanic that players will use to solve puzzles, which is clever and thematic. There will also be rhythm obstacles, and there seems to be decent freedom of movement.

Boti’s cyber world is undeniably adorable, with an art design that includes retro monitors and noticeably perceives general technology the way our culture used to. It’ll be a delight to explore, especially with such polished visuals.

On a side note, I’d really like to see a nod to Clippy, some floppy disks, and perhaps hear that lovely dial-up screech.

Boti: Byteland Overclocked creatively elaborates on a simple theme, and the platforming looks relatively modest. This accessible approach lines up with its colorful, splashy world.

It’s shaping up to be a cozy and impressive debut for Purple Ray Studio, so hopefully the platforming can distinguish itself.
