Combat racing board game “JOYRIDE” fully funded on Kickstarter

JOYRIDE: Survival of the Fastest, an upcoming racing TTG with unique vehicles and explosive action, has officially been fully funded on day one of its Kickstarter campaign. JOYRIDE was made by Rebellion Unplugged, who also worked on the Sniper Elite tabletop adaptation.

In JOYRIDE: Survival of the Fastest, up to four players compete on a variety of customizable maps, demolishing each other with special abilities and strategically handling their own vehicle on the way to the finish line.

At this time, JOYRIDE’s official Kickstarter page has an estimated delivery set for August 2024. You can watch today’s Kickstarter launch trailer on the Rebellion YouTube channel:

Although JOYRIDE doesn’t necessarily revolutionize the racing genre, the mechanics look very tidy and expansive. Its theme is also far more accessible than traditional racing tabletop games.

Because each car has unique hero abilities, and there are a variety of items like rockets and flashbangs to use against opponents, JOYRIDE comes off as more of a frantic demolition derby than comparable titles. In addition to some neat car management, it also feels like there’s less luck involved, which will reward players for making tactical decisions.

The art design from Pye Parr is also an absolute standout, balancing the gritty look of old school car movies with a stylish modern twist. It’s full of color and attitude, which is sure to draw more attention than familiar racetracks.

The replay value of its customizable maps should not go underestimated. If the mechanics are ultimately balanced and layered enough, then fans will be able to get pretty creative with their own ideas. That’s especially true as expansions arrive.

It’s been a treat to see Rebellion expand, establishing a key intersection between tabletop and video games. Though known for their Sniper Elite franchise, I also enjoyed Strange Brigade, a playful shooter with great co-op and a 30’s adventure theme.
