Tactical RPG indie “Untamed Tactics” sets August release date

Untamed Tactics, a strategic RPG from developer Grumpy Owl Games and publisher Ravenage Games, will officially launch on August 28th, 2023.

In Untamed Tactics, players will follow the story of valiant soldier Greycoat, exploring the procedurally generated world of the Wilds, using a customizable party and strategy to overcome enemies.

Untamed Tactics will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist the game now. There’s currently no word on console ports or other platforms. You can watch today’s release date trailer on the Ravenage YouTube channel:

Grumpy Owl Games is actually known for their board game Untamed: Feral Factions, which is directly related to today’s announcement, and was quite the hit. It featured anthropomorphic animal factions and card battles, and is often praised for its gorgeous art design and friendly gameplay.

Untamed Tactics’ world resembles that game very much, but the loop is completely different. Fans of Feral Factions will surely be pleased at the opportunity to explore a full-fledged narrative, which also has a healthy amount of humor. Today’s trailer showcases Constructive Criticism that “deals heavy Mental damage”.

The art style is also consistent, both lush and creative, and I have a special affection for hand-drawn work. The environments look varied, and the Untamed Tactics Steam page mentions that players can use these surroundings in the midst of battle. It also explains the Parley feature, which lets players interact with enemies during combat.

Overall, Untamed Tactics seems more complex than Grumpy Owl’s tabletop predecessor, even if it doesn’t always feel especially novel.

The playful tone, accessibility, and incredible art should help Untamed Tactics succeed. Grumpy Owl Games makes digital adaptations for other tabletop games, too. So, a new spin for Untamed is a compelling release that will bridge tabletop and video game experiences in a very unique way.
