Call of Duty: The Board Game, Arcane Wonders’ competitive and strategic tabletop adaptation of the hit video game franchise, has just released a new gameplay overview trailer to celebrate the new Kickstarter campaign.
In Call of Duty: The Board Game, players will customize loadouts, secretly plan their actions, and then engage each other in high-stakes combat using powerful cards.
At this time, Call of Duty: The Board Game’s Kickstarter page has an estimated delivery date of September 2024. You can watch today’s new trailer on the Arcane Wonders YouTube channel:
One of Arcane Wonders’ best known games is Onitama. While Call of Duty fans who haven’t dabbled in hobbyist gaming yet might be unfamiliar, Onitama made a big impression in the tabletop scene. It’s an unexpectedly complex and concentrated battling game with streamlined and friendly mechanics.
So, Arcane Wonders has already demonstrated excellent skills in the genres that Call of Duty would demand. They’ve also handled some high-profile IP before. Examples include RWBY: Combat Ready and Hello Neighbor: The Secret Neighbor Party Game, the latter of which is also another video game adaptation.
Call of Duty is a natural fit for tabletop action. Instead of emphasizing abilities or RNG, it leans into tactical maneuvers. Approaching the TTG version with hidden plotting is a great way to make each player feel like an IGL, and simultaneous results should make the pace feel faster.
The element of dice might be frustrating for some, but it does capture the sense of unpredictability in the video game, and will force players to get resourceful.
Without hands-on gameplay, it remains to be seen if Call of Duty: The Board Game can be frenetic and balanced enough. But for now the mechanics look tidy and accessible, the art design is gorgeous with plenty of fan service, and the pricing is reasonable.
